The suction procedure is the most common surgical abortion performed. The doctor stretches the cervix, so a general anesthesia is usually used. The suction will remove the fetus. A curette may also be used to scrape the rest of the fetus and placenta from the uterus.
Understand that the procedure will performed by a doctor in a clinic or hospital.
Lay on your back with your feet in stirrups as you would for a gynecological exam, and receive an anesthetic shot in your cervix.
Relax as the doctor stretches your cervical muscles with a speculum until he is able to insert the tools into your uterus. The actual procedure only lasts a few minutes.
Rest as the doctor removes the placenta and fetus from the uterus with a suction device.
Recover for about 60 to 90 minutes. Your doctor will explain when you can resume normal activity.
